Over a year ago we completed a very exciting project in collaboration with Agathoclis Beckmann Landscape Architects, for the FED, a provider of support & care for the Jewish community in Manchester, primarily for dementia patients at their care home. The garden is located in a very shaded, sandy and wet site, and the client wanted to create a garden, with a strong sensory feel, so Agatholics Beckmann designed a seaside themed garden, which has very powerful memories for almost everyone. The garden included a resin walkway to represent a sandy beach, a pier walkway, beach huts, various seaside memorabilia and sounds emitted throughout the design. We also created an oak boat planter set within a Scottish pebble dry water bed to evoke memories of the sea. Urban Landscapes built a very good working relationship with the client and designer, which resulted in a garden that was very well received by all involved including the residents, and went above and beyond expectations.
We have recently found out that the FED have been chosen by Journal of Dementia Care to enter their garden into a National Dementia Care Award, and have been announced as one of the finalists for the best Dementia Garden category. The National Dementia Care Awards were founded to highlight excellence in all parts of the sector and is now in its 8th year. The award will be made to a dementia focused facility/garden which has outstanding features that significantly enhance the quality of life of residents and staff.
We are really hoping the FED do well at the awards and are recognised for all the dedication and commitment they show in providing such outstanding care to their patients.
